I made the chimney skirt. The material was 25mm brass rod and fixed to the mill to cut the arc that fitted to the smoke box. Setting the tool bit position of the fly cutter was bit cumbersome. I measured the brass rod distance from the vice end. Then had the tool tip to touch the rod and turn the fly cuter by 180 degrees out.

煙突を作ることにします。まずは裾部分から。25mmの真鍮丸棒の一端をフライカッターで煙室の外径に合わせて削ります。これはフライカッターの刃の位置を設定しているところ。まず、ハイトゲージで材料のバイスからのつきだし量を測り。刃をこの端面に接触させた後180°回します。

Then I measured the distance from the vice end to tool tip. By subtracting above value from this value gave me the set diameter of the fly cutter. However this method was really messy and I did no like it. Better method should be devised.

そして、バイスから刃先までの長さを出し、上で求めた長さを引けばフライカッターの設定径が求められますが、この方法では設定がえらく面倒くさい。何か別の方法を考える必要がありそうです。

The end of the rod was cut to arc by the fly cutter.

フライカッターで端面の円弧を削ります。

The curve was confirmed with actual smoke box.

実際に煙室を当ててカーブを調べます。

The neck part was roughly cut.

くびれ部分をラフに切削。

I made a form tool (R5) to cut accurate radius of skirt.

裾部のRは5mmなのでR5の姿バイトを作ってきっちりR5に削りました。

Centre of the skirt was drilled to 12mm.

真ん中に12mmの穴を開けます。

The saddle shape of the skirt could be cut only by hand. This job was really a pain for me. At first I made rough griding by a rotary tool.

裾は鞍型になるんだがやすりで削らざるを得ない。えらく面倒である。まずはロータリーツールを使って荒削り。

Then I filed down to the desired shape. However 40 years old file I used was quite worn. So I bought new Nicolson round file.

後は、やすりでシコシコ削るんだが本当に面倒。手持ちの40年物の丸やすりが全然切れないんでNicolsonのやつを買ってきました。Nicolsonを使ってもしんどい。

If arrowed part was too thick it would not look good. I filed these parts until I satisfied. Right side of the photo was about finishing, but left side was still too thick I tought.

矢印の部分が厚いとあまりみっとも良くないので薄くなるまでひたすら削ります。右側はほぼ完成。左側はまだ厚すぎです。

横から見るとこんな感じ。このあたりでやすりがけは完了としました。

I polished the skirt with 240 grit sand paper sticked to about 10mm diameter metal rod.

次に10mm弱の丸棒に240番の紙やすりを両面テープで張り付けたものでやすり目を消していきます。

I polished the skirt further with strip of Scotchbrite on the lathe.

旋盤に移し、細く切ったScotchbriteで磨きます。

It looked better after polishing.

おー、結構それらしくなったではないか。

aThe edge of the skirt has scratches and bit dull. So I gave the edge slight cut.

エッジはやすりがけ中の傷が付き、ペーパーがけで角がだれてしまったので、軽く外周を切削し、傷を消し、エッジの角を出します。

Then I parted it off.

突っ切れば出来上がり。

It looked great for me as my first attempt.

まあいいんではないでしょうか。
