I bought a four-jaw chuck for my lathe. However the back plate of the lathe has holds only for three-jaw chuck. I really did not understand why the manufacture did not make holes for four-jaw chuck.

I determine the dimensions of the holes using CAD. Of course it could be done by trigonometric calculation, but CAD was much easier. In this way human being lose calculation capability.

I made tow plugs with centre mark to determine the centre of existing holes.

Then I marked the location of one of holes by a pair of dividers.

Rest of hole centres were also marked.

9mmm holes were drilled on the mill.

The location of holes was confirmed by a 8mm screw on actual four-jay chuck.

On other side of the back plate needed counter bores. The centre of the holes were aligned using a dead centre.

Counter bores were cut by a 15mm two flute end mill bought for this purpose.

Modified back plate. The work was not hard at all.

I punched a number on each jaw. This would be handy on centring.

The four jaw chuck installed on the lathe. I think cleaning the ends of this kind of rectangular bars is easier than mill.
