Edge Finder

Using an edge finder is not easy for beginners like me. I made a misunderstanding and watched the edge finder from the direction as upper photo. Actually the edge finder already passed the touching point, but I could not see it clearly.

I found it wobbled more in the same situation if I saw it from other direction as the photo below. Typical beginners mistake.

Hacksaw Blade

I made a chamfering tool from a hacksaw blade. However it did not work at all. Recent hacksaw blades seemed to have surface hardening to prevent breaking and not suitable for tool making. As upper one it bent but not broken.

I finally found a cheep Chinese hack saw blade sold at market. It broke off quite easily and worked well as chamfering tool material.

Threading SUS303

Compare these threaded SUS303 rods. Left one is much cleaner than right. Right one has rough surface and some parts are torn. I dry cut the thread on right, but used threading flued on left. The flued worked very well.

Rounding Bar Ends

When round-cutting the bar end, there is a risk of over cutting of sides. If A>B as top diagram, surely the over-cutting happens. Even A=B over-cutting may happen. So provide the material as B>A and stop the round-cutting when the flat part at the end disappears.

Turing Thin Rods

It is difficult to turn thin rods. The work tends to escape from the tool resulting larger diameter at the end. I used a tool shown in left at first and could not turn the work parallel at all. I thought it might be better to use a tool with larger scooping angle as right that might cut in the work by it self. I tried the tool on right. After a couple of strokes of cutting without changing the tool position, I could get reasonable good result. The top photo is an example of 2mm SUS303 rod turned to 1.4mm. In this case cutting length of 5mm was not a problem. So to turn longer length, simply make multiple of 5mm cuttings. The bottom photo shows turned to 1.4mm with length of 10mm.

Turing Thin Rods  (2)

I would add following conditions to above job:

  • Bit must be very sharp. Better to re-sharpen it.
  • Use higher speed of the lathe. I used maximum speed, 2000rpm.
  • Use tapping oil.
  • Do not cut in too much, or the work would be pulled by the bit and cut too much.
  • Cut in amount would be as little as 0.125mm for rough cutting.
  • Less than 0.05mm cut in for finishing.

This is an example to turn down 2mm SUS303 rod to 1.2mm. First 5mm long was turned.

Re-clamp the work and turn next 5mm.

This is the final cut, 5 times re-clamping getting 25mm length in total.

I parted off it by a file.

I used homemade rotary tool to polish the work. I made it about 45 years ago. It has terrible eccentricity, but still useful.

Finished 1.2mm rod. I was satisfied by the result.

Reaming

I reamed a piece of mild steel with 10mm reamer by the mill turning at 150rpm applying tapping oil. However the result was not good at all. Some parts were torn off. I think the speed was too high.

So I changed the gear to neutral position and hand turned the spindle by a spanner with left hand while feeding by right hand. The result was satisfactory. It seems to ream mild steel with large diameter the speed of the mill is too high. On other hand reaming brass with 12mm reamer by the lathe with 100rpm gave good result.

Deep Slotting

When I made a knurling tool holder, I had to make deep slots by mill. It was not easy at all. At first attempt the end mill bent while cutting and a nasty result was obtained.

I made a through hole shown in black to wash away chips by cutting fluid. I used 5mm 2 flute end mill in 6mm hole and fed in direction shown by blue arrow with cut in of 4mm. The end mill seemed bent by cutting force. The slot cut was not straight as shown in green curve.

So I changed the way of cutting. At first I made the through hole slightly below the centre line to cope with end mill bending. I fed the end mill with 2mm cut in at the centre of the through hole. I always cut in one direction and returned the end mill after pulled it out from the work. It was a bit time consuming process, but I could get reasonably good slot.

At this stage the slot shown by green line was cut. I cut side walls to red lines gradually. I fed the mill in upper cut.

Shown on top is failed cut. The bottom piece is cut with improved method and quite clean.
