Original tip part had to cut to accept the silver steel tip. It was not easy to find out how to hold the part for cut.

I made a flat section at the front of the part.

The part was held on the vice as this.

Cutting aluminium was amazingly easy comparing to silver steel. After cutting, I made two hole for M3 tapping.

Then I cut 0.1mm of bottom of tip.

I quench hardened the tip. I supported it by stainless wire, heated with a torch and quenched in water
. (Image photo only. I was too busy, and could not take photo in hardening process.)

I ground slope part of the tip by oil stone. I did not think the tip required any fracture toughness. So I did not temper it.

I adjusted the attitude of the tip using a piece of aluminium foil. Usually thin aluminium foil’s thickness is 6micron meter. So it can be a good test piece. I adjusted until at any point of the tip the foil did not slip out. The arrow shows a shim made from beer can.

Obviously I can not expect good absolute accuracy on this equipment. However I think it can be quite useful. It is light and very easy to handle. I tried scribing on a piece of mild steel. The tip seemed hard enough.

The tip chipped a bit. I did not temper it, but it was wrong. I tried to re-sharp it by oil stone, but hardened high-carbon steel was really hard.

So, I re-sharpened it by grinder and tempered it 210 deg. C for 20 minutes.
