Kyuusyuu Island where Hisatsu Line ran was supposed to have warm climate. However some times it snowed around Hisatsu Line, because of its high altitude. Waiting rooms in Kyuusyuu were not equipped with any heating and much colder than in Hokkaidou. So I always caught a cold in Kyuusyuu in winter journey.

九州とは言え、肥薩線ではよく雪が降りました。全体的に九州の駅舎は防寒対策なんてものがまるでなくて、待合室は北海道よりはるかに寒かったのです。そこで、北海道に冬に行って風邪を引いたことはありませんが九州に冬に行くといつも風邪を引いていました。

Track arrangement of Okoba Station clearly seen here. The station located further side. Trains from HItoyoshi climbed up right track. Left far track led to Yatake Station through great loop. Left near track was a switchback.

大畑のスイッチバック配置がよくわかります。奥が駅。右が人吉から上がってくる線路。左奥が矢岳への上り。左手前がスイッチバック線です。
