I used second hand rails at yard, but will use club rails for rest of the layout. These two types of rails have quite different profiles and can not be jointed together rail joiners. So I soldered a short piece of club rail to the end of second hand rails. At first jointing parts were milled out.

ヤード部分は中古のレールを使うが残りの部分はクラブレールを使う。これらのレールはだいぶ形状が違うので直接レールジョイントで繋ぐことはできない。そこで中古レールの端部にクラブレールをハンダ付けすることにした。接続部分をフライスで削る。

I used out red cedar sleeper material due to my miscalculation. I could not find the same timber at the shop I bought them before. I looked around a couple of stores but could not find any. I had to buy meranti timbers instead. Meranti is cheep but very hard and does not accept spikes easily. Especially dark coloured parts are very hard.

枕木用の杉材を使いきってしまった。必要量の計算を間違えていた。ところが以前買った店でこのサイズの杉材は扱い停止になったようで売っていなかった。ほかの店も探したが見つからない。仕方ないのでラワンを買わざるをえなかった。ラワンは安くていいんだが、硬くてスパイクを打ち込むのが大変だ。色の濃いのは非常に硬い。

The hardness of meranti fluctuates very much part by part. Soft parts are as soft as cedar, but it is really hard to drive in spikes in hardest parts. Darker part on the left here is too hard and I give it up. Middle and left ones are reasonably soft. It seems lighter in the colour and weight means softer.

ラワンは硬さのばらつきが大きく、柔らかい物は杉より少し固いぐらいで問題はないが、硬いのはスパイク打ち込みがほとんど不可能なくらい硬い。左の黒っぽい奴はあまりに硬いので使うのを諦めた。真ん中と右のは問題ない。できるだけ色が薄くて軽いものを選べばいいようだ。

Centre spikes were bent when I tried them on hard wood. I used 10mm spikes for soft wood, but they did not work well for hard wood. 8mm spikes worked better on hard wood.

真ん中のは硬い枕木に打ち込んだ時曲がったスパイク。柔らかい枕木には左の約10mmのスパイクを使用していたが硬い物には打ち込めない。盛大に曲ってしまう。硬いものには右の約8mmの細目のスパイクのほうが打ち込みやすかった。

Laying tracks at yard has been finished. After this stage I would use club rails and sleeper and no more spiking I need. What a great relief! More than 2000 spike were used here I think.

やっとヤード部分の線路敷設が完了した。今後はクラブレールとクラブまくらぎを使うので、もういい加減うんざりなスパイク打ちからは解放される。ここで使用したスパイクは2000本を超えていると思う。
