I made a prototype of a “Remote-controlled coupler”. This project was started when I found a SMA (Shape Memory Alloy) actuator (BioMetal Fibre) in a robotic site. Refer to “Toki Corporation” site for details. It is an SMA wire that contracts about 4% when a current is applied.
Prototype of the coupler is as left with quite simple structure. If the wire contracts, it pushes down the root of the return spring to move the hook to release position. The return spring works for up and down and swiveling.
I used 0.15mm BioMetal Fibre and the return spring is 0.25mm phosphor bronze wire. The supports of the BioMetal are made of 0.8mm brass wire.
