I decided to make some parts of Kato-style Diesel Loco from white metal. So I tried white metal casting. The method of making of moulds is similar to the double-sided moulds for resin casting. Bury the master in clay half way. However a pouring gate is necessary in this case. Make this by clay as shown by the arrow. 加藤風DLで一部部品をホワイトメタルで作る事にしたのでメタル鋳造に挑戦。鋳型の作り方は、レジンの鯛焼き方式と基本的にはかわりません。マスターを半分粘土に埋め込みます。矢印の所は湯を流し込む湯口になるところで、粘土を盛り上げておきます。 |

Build up walls around the clay. This parts is bit large. So I used 1.5mm styrene sheets. 粘土のまわりにスチロールの壁を立てます。この部品は大きいので1.5mmのスチロール板を使用。 |

Silicon was poured. I used dedicated silicon for white metal casting. This type of silicon can withstand high temperature of metal casting. I used M4670 from Barnes Products. Curing time was long. The data sheet said 24 hours, but it was bit cool in this season and it took 48 hours to cure completely. A シリコンを流し込みます。使用してシリコンは、ホワイトメタル鋳造用の高温に耐えるものです(Barnes M4670)。硬化時間は２４時間。遅いです。今寒いので、２４時間では完全に硬化しませんでした。48時間後に完全硬化。 |

Bottom plate and clay removed. The clay did not come out easily. So I scrubbed out the clay with toothbrush and isopropyl alcohol. 底板を外して、粘土を取り除きます。シリコンに粘土がこびりついてよく剥がれません。イソプロピルアルコールと歯ブラシで、粘土を落とします。 |

I applied Gunze Metal Color as separate agent. The part with arrow is the pouring gate and the gate should be made up with clay before second poring of silicon. シリコンにメタルカラーを離型材として塗ります。矢印の部分は湯口になるので、粘土を盛り上げておきます。 |

Second silicon poured. After 48 hours it was cured. シリコンを注いで更に４８時間後型から出します。 |

It was very hard to remove the master from the moulds. I broke apart the master when I pulled it hard. This type of silicon is very hard comparing to one for resin casting. マスターがなかなか抜けませんでした。無理やり抜いたらマスターが壊れてしまった。このシリコンレジン用と比べるとやたらに硬いです。抜くのが大変。 |

I found some MDF fibre stack to the silicon surface. Um, it seems the silicon may adhere MDF. It would better to apply some paint on the surface of MDF. I had to remove the fibre with isopropyl alcohol. 良く見ると、MDFの繊維がシリコンにこびりついています。どうも、シリコンはMDFについてしまうようです。MDFの表面に何か塗っといたほうがいいようです。こびりついたMDFの繊維はイソプロピルアルコールでしつこく拭いてなんとか取り除きました。 |
