I like L-shaped small diesel locomotives manufactured by Kato Works or Sakai Works. They had simple driving mechanism using roller chains. Kato Works is now famous for mobile cranes like this. One example I found in the net is this DL1 class of Ooigawa Railway, Sizuoka, Japan. I will design a freelance as this 8 tonne class loco based on photos found in the net.

It was common for this type of diesel loco operated side covers of their bonnet removed as this photo. I want to make the model like this, even making of the dummy engine would be a nightmare.

At first driving mechanism must be decided. I ordered a power truck from USA Trains (R22-162). The wheelbase of this unit is bit long and the diameter of the wheels is bit larger than I wanted. However I could not found any better alternative.
I drew the outline around this unit as below.

  • 重量を稼ぐために台枠はホワイトメタルの鋳造にする予定。全く経験ないのにうまく行くでしょうか?(^^;;

  • The centre of bearing hole would be shifted upward to pretend smaller diameter of wheels.
  • The hight of the truck frame seems bit high because of size of the power truck.
  • I try to make tuck frame by white metal casting to get enough weight. I have no experience in metal casting. So I wonder a bit.
  • The loco would be powered from both the rail and internal batteries with R/C. This would be an ideal solution against poor power correction with virtually infinite operating period.
The drawing may be changed on the way.

I started from this work. This type of DL has manufactures logo cast on side frames. I think duplicating this is quite important for the model. Simple decal would not seem nice. I decided to make this by etching. I transferred the image to polished 1mm brass plate using “Toner Transfer PC Boards” technique. If the brass plate with the image is cooled quickly by putting into water, the toner seems getting weaker and easily coming out. So I cooled the plate down slowly by keeping still hot iron on the plate. There are I's at both ends of the logo. The edges of the image seem to come out easier than other parts. They work as guard while transferring. Any way these I's were removed after successful transfer.

Put the brass plate in the zip bag filled with etching fluid. Agitate the fluid by kneading the bag while enjoying net surfing. After one and half hours, a part of image started to come out. So the etching process stopped at this moment.

The plate was etched about 0.2mm plus. I wanted to have more than 0.3mm etching depth. I made a compromise and accepted this depth.
Some parts were missing by holes or scratches on the pattern. They might be fixed by CA putty.
