JNR D50 and D60 Classes
D50 class was designed to overtake 9600 class (standard freight loco then) and manufactured from 1923 to 1931. Only 380 of them were manufactured because of less demand of freight while the Great Depression. D50 class was the first class in JNR locos that employed American loco design practices, such as bar-framed truck, water pump & water heater and arch pipe in the boiler and considered as mother of modern JNR locos. D50 class was very much relied on by engineers and some engineers preferred D50 to later model of D51.
D60 class was a modified D50. They were modified to replace retiring 9600 class. The driver axle weight of D50 class was too heavy for local lines. So D60 class had two axle trailing track to distribute weight. The two axle trailing track was too modern and did not match to the original parts at all. But I appreciated the modification because it extended the life of the class.
D50 class was probably my most favourite JNR loco of all. Unfortunately I was born too late to take photos of them but lucky enough to see D60 class. |
